Is Solar Worth It in Ireland?
Yes — despite Ireland's reputation for cloudy skies, solar panels are one of the best investments an Irish homeowner can make in 2026. Ireland receives enough sunlight to make solar PV systems economically viable, and with SEAI grants, rising electricity prices, and the Clean Export Guarantee, the payback period is now typically 5-7 years.
Over 100,000 Irish homes have already installed solar panels, and that number is growing rapidly.
How Much Do Solar Panels Cost in Ireland?
The cost depends on system size. Here's a rough guide for 2026:
A 2kW system (6-8 panels) costs approximately €4,000-€5,000 before grants. After the SEAI grant of €900, your net cost is around €3,100-€4,100.
A 3.6kW system (10-12 panels) costs approximately €6,000-€7,500 before grants. After the SEAI grant of €1,600, your net cost is around €4,400-€5,900.
A 6kW system (16-20 panels) costs approximately €8,500-€11,000 before grants. After the SEAI grant of €2,100, your net cost is around €6,400-€8,900.
These prices include panels, inverter, mounting hardware, and installation by a certified installer.
SEAI Solar PV Grant Explained
The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) provides grants for solar PV installations on homes built before 2021. The grant covers:
- €900 for the first 2kWp installed
- €300 per additional kWp up to 4kWp
- Maximum grant of €2,100
To qualify, you must use an SEAI-registered installer and your home must be at least 5 years old. The application is straightforward — your installer typically handles the paperwork.
The Clean Export Guarantee (CEG)
Since 2022, Irish homeowners can sell surplus solar electricity back to the grid through the Clean Export Guarantee. Rates vary by provider but typically range from 18-24 cent per kWh exported. This means your panels earn money even when you're not home using the electricity they generate.
How Much Will I Save?
A typical 3.6kW system in Ireland generates around 3,200-3,600 kWh per year. If you use 50% of that directly (self-consumption) and export the rest, your annual savings break down roughly as:
Direct savings: 1,700 kWh × €0.42/kWh = ~€714 saved on your bill
Export income: 1,700 kWh × €0.21/kWh = ~€357 earned from exports
Total annual benefit: approximately €1,071
At a net cost of around €5,000 (after SEAI grant), that's a payback period of under 5 years — and panels last 25-30 years.
Do Solar Panels Work in Irish Weather?
Solar panels work with daylight, not direct sunshine. While Ireland gets less sun than southern Europe, we still receive enough solar irradiation to generate excellent returns. In fact, solar panels are slightly more efficient in cooler temperatures — Ireland's mild climate is actually an advantage.
You'll generate more in summer (April-September) and less in winter, but averaged over the year, the economics are very strong.
Battery Storage — Is It Worth Adding?
A battery system (typically 5-10kWh) costs an additional €3,000-€6,000. Batteries let you store solar energy generated during the day for use in the evening. They increase your self-consumption rate from around 50% to 70-80%, which improves your savings.
For most households, a battery adds another €200-€400 per year in savings. Whether it's worth the extra cost depends on your usage patterns and budget. If you're often home during the day, you may not need one.
Planning Permission
In most cases, solar panels do not require planning permission in Ireland if they're mounted on the roof and don't protrude more than 150mm. Ground-mounted systems may need permission depending on size and location. Your installer will advise you on this.
How to Choose an Installer
Always use an SEAI-registered installer — this is a requirement for the grant. Get at least three quotes, check reviews, and ask about warranties. A reputable installer will offer at least a 10-year workmanship warranty and 25-year panel performance guarantee.
