SEAI Grants for Irish Homeowners in 2026: Everything You Need to Know

From solar panels to heat pumps, the SEAI offers thousands in grants for Irish homeowners. Here's every grant available and how to apply.

What Is the SEAI?

The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) is the government body responsible for promoting sustainable energy in Ireland. They administer a range of grants to help homeowners improve their home's energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.

These grants can cover a significant portion of the cost of upgrades like solar panels, insulation, heat pumps, and more.

Solar PV Grant

Grant amount: Up to €2,100

The solar PV grant covers the installation of solar photovoltaic panels on your home. The grant is structured as €900 for the first 2kWp, plus €300 for each additional kWp up to 4kWp.

Eligibility: Your home must be built before 2021 and you must use an SEAI-registered installer. The system size must be between 1kWp and 4kWp to qualify for the full grant.

Solar Thermal Grant

Grant amount: Up to €1,200

Solar thermal panels heat your water using sunlight. They're different from solar PV (which generates electricity). A solar thermal system can provide 50-60% of your annual hot water needs.

Heat Pump Grant

Grant amount: Up to €6,500

Heat pumps (air-to-water or ground-source) are one of the most efficient ways to heat your home. They extract heat from the air or ground and can be 3-4 times more efficient than a traditional boiler. The grant covers a significant portion of the installation cost, which typically ranges from €8,000 to €15,000.

Important: To qualify for the heat pump grant, your home typically needs to be well-insulated first (BER of B2 or better after works).

Insulation Grants

Attic insulation: €1,500

Cavity wall insulation: €1,700

Internal wall insulation (dry lining): Up to €4,500

External wall insulation: Up to €8,000

Insulation is often the most cost-effective upgrade for older Irish homes. Many homes built before the 2000s have inadequate insulation, leading to significant heat loss and high heating bills.

Window and Door Grants

Grant amount: Up to €4,000

Upgrading to A-rated windows and doors reduces heat loss and draughts. The grant applies to the full replacement of windows and external doors.

Heating Controls

Grant amount: Up to €700

Modern heating controls, including programmable thermostats, zone heating, and smart controls, help you heat your home more efficiently. This is a relatively low-cost upgrade with quick payback.

One-Stop-Shop Service

The SEAI's One-Stop-Shop service allows you to bundle multiple upgrades into a single project managed by a registered contractor. This simplifies the process and can bring your BER rating up significantly in one go.

National Home Energy Upgrade Scheme

For a deeper retrofit, this scheme covers up to 80% of costs for qualifying homes. It's designed to bring homes from a BER rating of D, E, F, or G up to a B2 rating. This can include insulation, heat pump, ventilation, and renewable energy in one comprehensive upgrade.

How to Apply

1. Get a BER assessment: Know your starting point

2. Choose your upgrades: Decide which grants you want to apply for

3. Get quotes: Obtain quotes from SEAI-registered contractors

4. Apply online: Submit your application through the SEAI website

5. Wait for approval: Don't start work until your grant is approved

6. Complete the work: Have the work done by your chosen contractor
